OSA hurts hearts
"Masandal tulog" is a common Filipino expression describing how someone very easily falls asleep once his back is rested on any surface.  It is often misconstrued as a sign that one is a good sleeper.  On the contrary, though, it should be investigated because it can be sign that he had poor quality of sleep the previous night.  This is commonly seen in patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea, a chronic disease that involves the repeated collapse of the upper  airway during sleep.  This is manifested as repeated loud snoring, gasping for breath or choking during sleep.  It is most common in overweight persons but can also be seen in those with narrow upper airways (blocking by enlarge tonsils in children, for example) or the configuration of the bony structures of the face.
Sleep apnea puts an enormous strain on your heart, repeatedly causing oxygen levels to drop and blood pressure surge as you sleep. It puts you at risk for:
H - heart failure
E - elevated bp
A - atrial fibrillation (irregular heart beat)
R - resistant hypertension
T - type 2 diabetes
S - stroke (brain attack)
